Just arrived in our latest shipment from the US & available for purchase is this mint condition example of the iconic Springfield 'Trapdoor' 1873 rifle updated with the Buffington rear sight which unusually, comes complete with the original cleaning rod (many were discarded throughout the years). This rifle is dated 1878 as year of manufacture, just 2 years after Custer had more Indians come to his party than expected.
Since posting this ad, it has been pointed out to us by a knowledgeable collector (thanks Colin) that this rifle boasts the round inspectors mark which is quite rare, as only rifles dated 1877-1879 were marked as such, making this a very desirable addition to your collection.
The black powder Model 1873 continued to be the main service rifle of the U.S. military until it was gradually replaced by the Springfield Model 1892 bolt action rifle, essentially a copy of the Norwegian Krag-Jørgensen action. Replacement began in 1892 & despite its obsolescence, the Model 1873 was still used by secondary units during the Spanish–American War in Cuba & the Philippines.
This rifle has excellent markings clearly visible including the inspectors proof on the wood & the other markings are in fine condition, as is the metalwork as can be seen in the photos.
There is no evidence of historical pitting or rust of any kind as far as we can tell & this is the original finish which is remarkable.
This is your chance to own an original black powder rifle with genuine US Army provenance.
Do your own research & you will know if this is for you. Please view the photos carefully & make your decision based on what you see as they form the main description & override all written information. Ask for more if desired.
We think we have described it accurately & correctly but do not claim to be infallible so if we have got anything wrong, it is unintentional & are happy for feedback from people who know more than we do.
Whilst we check these out for serviceability, the warranty has expired & this is sold on an 'as is' basis. As with all used guns, we recommend you have this checked by a suitably qualified person prior to shooting.
We have a pretty unique refund policy on our collectable guns whereby we will refund your money if it is not as described when you receive it. Just let us know before you decide to send it back.
