Offered here is a unique combination of French Revolutionary artifacts. A French flintlock cavalry pistol with a document from the Committee of Public Safety, Paris.
The pistol is a French model, 1777 flintlock in very good condition. The .70 caliber, tapering, smoothbore barrel measures 7 ½ inches with the whole pistol measuring 13 inches.
The brass frame is clearly engraved ‘St Etienne’ under the cock and an arsenal mark appears next to the pan. The barrel has the date stamp of ‘85’ [for 1785] at the breech and there is a faint ‘1786’ on the walnut grip. See photos.
The rammer is original to the pistol and action is in good working order.
The document is an approval from the Committee of Public Safety to the proposal from the Commission of Arms & Powder. The proposal to send fusils to the Naval troops in Brest and Rochefort. The document is signed by four committee members. The most interesting being Jean Marie Collot d’ Herbois (1749 – 1796), a famous French actor, dramatist and Revolutionary President of the National Convention in June 1793.
While d' Herbois is noted for saving Madame Tussaud from death by the guillotine during the Reign of Terror, he did administer the execution of over 2,000 people in Lyon.
The pistol is sold as a collector item only.
Price includes shipping, layby available.
