Winchester Commemoratives were first introduced in 1964 & each Commemorative was issued as a reproduction of a historically famous gun model or to honor a historically significant person, group, event or institution relating to U.S. or Canadian history.

Commemoratives are generally of very excellent quality & are often embellished with fancy stocks & metal finishes such as silver, nickel or gold plating.  Manufactured to be instant collectibles, they are pleasing to the eye.

In 1979, Winchester produced 19,999 Model 94 Legendary Frontiersman rifles in their New Haven, Connecticut, USA factory to commemorate the pioneers who explored the West. The serial numbers ran consecutively from LF1 to LF19999 with this example being LF16685. These post-1964 Model 94 actions were the later type with good steel receivers & improved shell elevators & loading gates.

The Legendary Frontiersmen, fortunately, also predates the introduction of the ugly receiver mounted cross-bolt safety mandated by lawyers that appeared in 1992 & was finally replaced by the current top tang safety in 2003. Like all Model 94 rifles made before 1992, a quarter-cock hammer notch serves as the "safety" for the Legendary Frontiersmen.

The bottom line is that the Legendary Frontiersmen of 1979 is based on the best of the post-'64 Model 94 actions & this example has retained all of the original rich, dark blueing on the barrel, magazine tube, lever, trigger, hammer & crescent buttplate. The forend cap & engraved frame retain a commensurate amount of their original silver plated colour hardening finish which perhaps has developed a slight tarnish over the years. We don't want to go crazy cleaning this baby so it may well come up better than it appears here with some careful loving.

This rifle boasts a gorgeous equivalent to Grade 3 walnut stock texture, almost no handling marks or blemishes in the original varnish.

Happily, the rifle comes with the original styrofoam box with printed sleeve & appears to be unfired.

This is an excellent, virtually unused Legendary Frontiersman Model 94 in overall Collector Grade condition.

It is a little known fact that .38-55 was the original Winchester cartridge for the legendary Model 1894 & we have about 60 rounds of factory ammo which can be collected if you live local to the Coast.

As can be seen in the photos, both sides of the receiver are nearly 100% covered with engraving. The right side of the receiver pictures a standing grizzly bear, a frontiersman in buckskin greeting two Indians on horseback, a rattlesnake & a beaver. The left side of the receiver features a fierce bald eagle about to grab a jack rabbit with its extended talons & a mounted frontiersman leading his pack mule through high country with a second mounted frontiersman following with both sides of the receiver complemented by American style scroll & borders.

The fit & finish of this rifle is almost perfect. As is the Winchester custom with their high quality rifles, the well matched stock & fore-end of the rifle are carved from high quality walnut with attractive grain to being full fancy grade.  The extensive, hand cut checkering wraps around both the straight hand stock & fore-end in a distinct Fleur-de-lis pattern. The wood to metal fit is very good. Winchester obviously put a lot of time & attention into the manufacture of these rifles, which we consider to be among the most attractive of the Model 94 commemoratives.

This may well be the flagship of your Winchester collection or it could be a great start to it.

These don't come along often in Australia so don't hesitate if you think this is for you.

We are not going to try & rate the condition out of 100 as everyone seems to have a different opinion on what the percentages should be, so we'll let the pictures be the description. You will know if this is for you so view the photos carefully & make your decision based on what you see as they form the main description & override all written information. For many more visit:

We think we have described it accurately & correctly but do not claim to be infallible so if we have got anything wrong, it is unintentional.

Whilst we check these out for serviceability, the warranty has expired & this is sold on an 'as is' basis. As with all used guns, we recommend you have this checked by a suitably qualified person prior to shooting.

Standard cost for shipping to metro locations is $55 & all guns are sent via StarTrack without insurance but packed very well.
