Offered here is a well-used, well cared for and accessorised MK III, Snider, long rifle made by Enfield and dated 1869.
The .577 caliber, 3 grooved, sighted, steel barrel measures 35 ½ inches with the whole arm measuring 54 inches. The barrel is held in place with three, barrel bands, all marked with the correct acceptance stamps. The barrel also has the correct proof and acceptance stamps and the number ‘1246’ which may be an issuance number. The barrel is also fitted with the correct ladder rear sight.
The lock plate is clearly marked with the crowned ‘VR’ cypher and ‘1869 / ENFIELD’. The action is in good working order as is the MK III, breechblock.
The regulation brass furniture is in a solid condition but showing much use.
The full-length stock is also in a good used condition but again, shows signs of much use. There is a War Department rondel on the left of the shoulder stock but the rest of the markings are un-readable.
The rifle also comes with an original ordnance bayonet, scabbard and a frog in poor condition as well as a dummy round, model 1853 cork tompion and a period Enfield rifle tool. The leather breech and sight protector is modern.
All in all, an interesting combination of rifle and accessories from the Victorian Empire.
Sold as a collector item only.
Price includes shipping in Australia, layby available.

About Us
Antique guns for sale in Australia
Steel & Shot, authentic antique arms, takes pleasure in filling a special niche for the antique arms collectors of Australia. Depending on availability our offerings are sourced locally and overseas. They range from before the time of Cook’s voyages up to the Kelly era with items to suit the beginner through to the investor.
As a hobby business Steel & Shot has grown out of a love and fascination [my long suffering wife would say ”obsession”] with antique arms. I am fascinated by the technical innovation and development, along with the history and artistry of these objects and artefacts.
If any of these items are of interest, or you just want to chat about antique arms, drop us a line or two via the contact page.
