Bentley & Playfield 12 Bore Nitro Paradox.

Bentley & Playfair was a traditional 19th- and 20th-century British gunmaking firm known for producing quality sporting firearms, side-by-side shotguns, and double rifles. History and Evolution Establishment: The firm was founded in Birmingham in 1848 when Joseph Bentley partnered with Charles Playfair. They operated primarily out of Summer Lane in Birmingham, building a reputation as dependable gun, rifle, and pistol makers for both home and international markets (including outlets or trade links in London, Melbourne, Paris, and Cape Town). Mergers and Later Years: Following Charles Playfair's death in 1898, the original company dissolved around 1900. However, the name was revived and merged later, operating as Hollis, Bentley & Playfair (associated with Isaac Hollis & Sons) through the early-to-mid 20th century before finally closing operations in Birmingham in 1953. The 12 Bore Nitro Proofed for Conical Paradox Ball or 1 1/8 Oz. of shot as a Shotgun. The chambers are 2 ½” and the action is based on the much revered “Anson & Deeley “action complete with a third bite locking the barrels in place with the top lever locking over the barrel extension. The rifle is border engraved and fitted with extractors. The gun is in very nice condition and I have been told very accurate as a rifle. The bores are very good and importantly the ratchet rifling is sharp and the bores shiny. The traditional rust bluing on the action & barrels gives a nice flat non- reflective finish. The barrels are fitted with a quarter rib with two folding leaves sighted for 50 & 100 Yards. The leaves are raised when shooting Ball and fold flush when the gun is used as a shotgun. The foresight is a beaded blade. The Timber has a English straight hand stock also in good condition with no cracks or serious dents. Pul is 14 ¾” with a ½” Rubber Pad. Checkering is very good giving a good purchase to the hands when mounted. Action & Barrels are on the face with the top lever straight. This Paradox 12 Bore rifle is available for a very reasonable $4,750.
