In February 2022, a program for the redraft of the Firearms Act 1973 (the Act) commenced, with the paramount principle of improving public safety through the responsible and legitimate ownership of firearms.
Considerable consultation with relevant industries, government agencies and community stakeholders culminated in instructions for the draft Firearms Amendment Bill 2023 proposing a modernized firearms legislative framework.
The Minister for Police, Honourable Paul Papalia tabled the Firearms Act Reform Consultation Paper at Parliament earlier today. A copy of the Firearms Act Reform Consultation Paper is available on the WA Police Force Firearms Act Reform webpage.
The Firearms Act Reform Consultation Paper provides an overview of proposed changes relating to the legislative reform of the WA Firearms Act 1973; the largest reform of the firearms legislation in recent history.
To provide clarity on these proposed changes a set of FAQs have been uploaded in the Help Centre on the WA Police Force Licensing Services (Firearms) Webpage.
