The model 1842 was the first percussion pistol adopted by the US military. It was also the last big bore, single shot, smooth bore issued to the US military in any great quantity.
Overall the pistol measures 14 inches in length with a sighted .54 Cal 8.5 inch barrel.
The lock plate is clearly marked ‘US / H ASTON & CO’ in the centre and ‘MIDDTN / CONN / 1851’ behind the hammer.
Remnants of the barrel proof mark and date of 1851 on the barrel tang are still visible. A small sub inspector’s mark of ‘P’ is also found on the brass behind the barrel screw and in front of the trigger guard.
The stock is also in good and solid condition with a faint inspection cartouche. Most likely being ‘WAT’ for Captain William Anderson Thornton.
The action is strong and crisp. The nipple appears to be a later replacement.
All in all a very good example of the US Model 1842 Aston
Sold as an antique collector item only.
