10.75×68mm Mauser History

The 10.75x68mm Mauser (also known as the .423 Mauser) was introduced by Mauser in the early 1920s and was a popular, large-caliber cartridge for hunting dangerous game in Africa and India with hunters who often sought a hard-hitting round capable of stopping large and dangerous game like elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion, and leopard. It was known for fitting well into strong controlled round feed Mauser 98 actions with its low-pressure and modern rimless design,
The cartridge has a non-belted case with a 0.495-inch (12.57 mm) head diameter 28-degree shoulder angle, and maximum length of 81 mm (3.19 inches), designed to fit reliably into a Mauser 98 action while providing deep penetration with heavy bullets. Typical factory loads include a 347-grain (0.423'' Diameter) (22.5 g) soft-point or full-metal-jacket Bullet with a muzzle velocity of 2,200–2,300 fps (670–685 m/s), generating pressures up to 48,000 psi (3,300 bar) per CIP standards and energy around 3,900 ft⋅lbf (5,300 J), making it suitable for big-game rifles with 24-to 26-inch barrels.
The primary applications of the 10.75 x 68 have centered on hunting & Culling large, tough & potentially dangerous game animals for many European hunters and settlers in Africa and India often looking for a hard-hitting round capable of stopping large dangerous game like elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion, and leopard.
Hunters liked its relatively low recoil (similar to a .375 H&H Mag) and the lighter rifles it allowed for as noted by John "Pondoro" Taylor who used it extensively to take all of Africa's "Big Five" (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard).
The original factory Load drove a 347-grain bullet (of 0.423'' diameter same as the 404 Jeffreys) at 2,200–2,300 fps but this can be improve substantially with modern powders with reformed brass cases now commercially available from manufacturers like Bertram, Horneber ( Germany) and Buffalo Arms, enabling handloaders to produce modern higher energy loads with 347- to 400-grain bullets for big-game Hunting.
