A very rare and fine, side by side, sliding cut-off flintlock pistol made by Thomas Richards around 1770. Thomas is recorded as working from 54 High Street, London from 1768 to 1784.
The sliding cut-off flintlock is an exceptionally rare form of pistol. On the left side is a brass sliding bar that when engaged exposes the hidden flash pan ready for a second shot.
The .47 caliber, round, three stage, smoothbore, cannon barrels measure 4 ½ inches each while the whole pistol measures around 11 ¾ inches. Both barrels still screw off. One barrel is numbered ‘1’ which corresponds to the number on the breech.
The boarder lined breech is engraved with flowers and a stand of arms with the right side having ‘T RICHARDS’ in a scroll. Each breech is also marked with early London view and proof marks as well as the barrel maker’s mark of ‘TR’ for Thomas Richards.
The action is in working order as is the brass sliding cut-off. The trigger guard is loose.
The walnut stock has a well, executed repair half way down the grip. Much of the original silver wire work is still present. See photos.
The wrist echelon features a rococo style, asymmetrical shield over a stand of arms surmounted by a Roman gladiator helmet. The echelon is engraved with the Latin ‘SCUTO DIVINO’ (Shield to the Divine) over a pirate-like figure raising a scimitar.
The silver capped, bulbous pommel, is decorated with a resting lion, surmounting a stone wall and stand of arms.
