For sale, on consignment, a very nice example of the Westley Richards Double Rifle chambered for 400/360 High Velocity Nitro Express 2 ¾” case.

Founded in 1812 by William Westley Richards, Westley Richards have been making fine British guns and rifles ever since. Westley Richards’ records show this T series rifle was manufactured in 1911 for Lyon & Lyon of Calcutta, India.

Born in Scotland in 1859, James Lyon worked for Gray & Co Gunmakers of Inverness before he was recruited to manage the RB Rodda & Co store in Calcutta, India in 1885.

In 1895, Lyon left Rodd & Co to establish Lyon & Lyon in the Grand Hotel Arcade, Calcutta. By 1899, Lyon & Lyon were agents for Britain’s finest gun makers including, Westley Richards, Holland & Holland, WW Greener, Joseph Lang & Sons, and were later appointed as Gun Makers to His Excellency the Viceroy.

Good straight grain walnut stock, with right-hand cheek piece, steel butt plate and sling eye
Length of pull 14 ½” to the centre
Semi-pistol grip with diamond point chequering with mullered border and ebonite pistol grip cap
Firm fitting walnut forend with horn forend tip and Deeley & Edge catch Diamond point chequering also with mullered border – some bruising evident

Barrels
26” side by side blued steel barrels – engraved “Westley Richards & London”, “WR 400/360 HV Cartridge” and “Made Expressly for Lyon & Lyon Calcutta” chambered for 400/360 High Velocity Nitro Express 2 ¾” cartridges – bluing faded
Clean bores with good rifling, showing slight wear - right bore gauges .361 and left bore gauges .360.
Matt raised top rib with Dolls Head extension and third bite
Ramped bead – blade foresight and one standing express sight and four folding platinum lined leaves marked 200, 300, 400 and 500 [yards] and sling eye to bottom rib

Overall weight about 8lb 9oz.
Birmingham Proof House marks show the rifle was proven for 41 gn cordite and 314 gn bullets. The rifle comes with three-piece reloading die set and 50 brass cases. Reloading research notes available.

This rifle presents in good to very good used condition. The barrels fit tightly on the standing breech. Mechanically, the rifle is excellent with cosmetic storage and handling marks to metal and woodwork commensurate with age and honest use. This rifle would restore well and grade up.

The seller’s father used this rifle to great effect when living in India.
