Offered for sale on behalf of a deceased estate is this beautiful English side by side sporting shotgun which is in magnificent condition, as can be seen in the photos.
We believe this is circa 1910 based on research done by the family & comes with a 'Leg of Mutton' leather case which is also in excellent condition.
This is Nitro proofed meaning you can shoot modern 2.5'' ammunition.
The rib is marked "J. & W. TOLLEY, MAKERS, ST. MARYS SQUARE, BIRMINGHAM'', indicating it was made before they moved down to London in 1883.
The action & other metal parts other than the barrels have very nice scroll engraving while the blueing on the barrels is in excellent condition.
Correctly, this has double triggers & selective ejectors.
We would estimate the English walnut stock as Grade 3 in our opinion or at least Grade 2 & is in excellent condition also, see photos. Very interestingly, there is a brass disc insert on the underside of the stock which we understand is the initials of a family member & there are Indian characters stamped alongside which identify it's owner as having lived in Saroornagar, a locality in Hyderabad, India.
We suspect this was owned by an English member of the Indian public service, as the grandfather of one of our staff was high up in the British Colonial government which oversaw the Indian government departments prior to 1947 & recalls his father showing him photos of an almost identical shotgun, right down to the brass disc & similar stamps in that same spot!
The stock has a near neutral cast but is for a right handed shooter.
The English walnut is in overall excellent original condition with occasional scattered light marks & could benefit from some TLC.
Surprisingly, the bores on both barrels are stupidly smooth & shiny...our clay guns have barrels which are more marked than this!
This would make an excellent addition to your vintage English shotgun collection, the start of one or just a beautiful English sporting shotgun to shoot at side by side comps!
Be the one to snap this up, Tolley's don't come along often, especially in this condition with leather case!
We think we have described it accurately & correctly but do not claim to be infallible so if we have got anything wrong, it is unintentional & are happy for feedback from people who know more than we do.
Please make your decision based on the photos as these form the main description & override all other. For many more, visit:
