The Springfield Arms Co. Warner’s Patent Belt and Navy percussion revolvers are some of the rarest American percussion revolvers available.
This six shot, single trigger .36 calibre revolver has a sighted 6 inch barrel and was made in 1851.
All the engraving on the frame and etching on the cylinder is very clear with virtually no wear. All the metal profiles are sharp with no wear and all the nipples and nipple wells are in very good shape. Note that there are some light rust spots that need cleaning. See photos.
The lightly applied ‘SPRINGFIELD ARMS CO.’ is visible on top-strap and the ‘WARNERS PATENT JAN. 1851’ is clear on the frame.
The bore rates about 9.5 out of 10. The grips are also excellent with all of their thin varnish left and only a few handling scratches. The serial number ‘2’ is found on the under side of the right grip. The assembler’s mark of ‘14Y’ mark is also found on the back of the cylinder and under the top-strap.
The action works well with the hammer rotating the cylinder as intended.
The 1971 publication ‘American Percussion Revolvers’ by Frank Sellers and Samuel Smith, estimates that there were only about 125 of these Navy single trigger revolvers were made. The company went out of business soon after Colt started his legal action against the Massachusetts Arms Co for patent infringement. But that’s another story.
This is probably one of the best examples of this model revolver that you will find in Australia.
