A very good example of an Enfield marked, Victorian Police, pattern 1842, constabulary pistol. Mainly as a result of the gold rush, the unified Victorian Police force was established on 8th January, 1853. This force replaced various disparate and independent forces such as the rural constabulary, gold escorts and water police.
The .65 calibre, round smoothbore barrel with attached swivel rammer measures 6 inches with the whole arm measuring 11 inches. The barrel has clear proof and government inspection marks.
The lock is clearly marked with the V.R. Royal cypher, ‘1853 / ENFIELD’ and arrow and crown acceptance mark.
The action is in very good working order.
The full-length stock is in good condition as is the standard brass furniture and lanyard swivel. The stock also has worn stock makers stamps.
The issuance mark of ‘A18’ is clearly visible. The ‘A’ is for the Melbourne Police district and the ‘18’ for the gun number.
All in all, a good solid example of an early Victorian police sidearm that saw service throughout the gold rush era and beyond.

About Us
Antique guns for sale in Australia
Steel & Shot, authentic antique arms, takes pleasure in filling a special niche for the antique arms collectors of Australia. Depending on availability our offerings are sourced locally and overseas. They range from before the time of Cook’s voyages up to the Kelly era with items to suit the beginner through to the investor.
As a hobby business Steel & Shot has grown out of a love and fascination [my long suffering wife would say ”obsession”] with antique arms. I am fascinated by the technical innovation and development, along with the history and artistry of these objects and artefacts.
