Here we have a Dutch version of the French, year IX (9) cavalry musketoon made around 1815 and later converted to percussion.
The barrel carries the date of 1815 while the lock carries 1814 and the butt plate tang has 1850.
The .72 caliber, round, sighted smoothbore barrel, numbered 209 measurers just under 30 inches with the whole arm measuring 42 ½ inches. Originally the barrel would have been .69 caliber and rifled. At conversion rear and front sights were added. Later for reasons unknown the barrel was bored out to a smoothbore .72 caliber.
The barrel also has a faint date of what appears to be ‘1813’. It also appears that the nipple has been snapped off as a result of excessive dry firing.
The lock still has the remnants of the original brass, flintlock pan and a faint ‘14’ for 1814. The action no longer releases from full cock.
The regulation iron furniture is in fair condition as is the full-length walnut stock. The butt plate tang has the date 1850 and the same number ‘209’ as the barrel. The original period rammer is numbered 226.
All in all, an interesting example of the change over from the flintlock era to the percussion.
