For sale, on consignment, a great example of a William Evans of Pall Mall, St James, London box lock ejector double rifle in 470 Nitro Express.
Webley made and finished by William Evans circa 1912, double rifle 10527 presents in good, used condition.
William Evans commenced making fine guns and rifles in 1883 having originally worked for James Purdey and then Holland and Holland.
Lock
Strong Webley PHV1 box lock long bar with strong, well-timed ejectors and twin triggers.
Side plates engraved with “William Evans” with fine foliate engraving to side and base plates as well as fences and top tang.
Firm, right hand top-lever with manual gold “Safe” safety to top tang.
Stock
Walnut, straight grain stock with semi-pistol grip and engraved steel pistol grip cap. Good flat top chequer with tears drops and mullered border. Right hand beaded, shadow line cheek piece. Vacant gold escutcheon and sling swivel.
Length of pull is 14.5” or 37cm to centre including ¾” or 2cm rubber recoil pad with ebonite spacer.
Walnut splinter fore-end with firm lever release and good flat top chequer.
Barrels
The 28” or 71cm sound side by side re-blacked chopper-lump steel barrels with club head extension and third bite. The hand file cut raised top rib has one standing and two folding spring leaf rear sights with gold centre line – 50, 100 and 150 yards.
Ramped blade foresight with ivory bead and additional flip up moon sight.
Bright, clean bores with sharp rifling.
London Proof House proof marks show the rifle was proven for 470 nitro express.
Sling swivel to bottom rib.
The rifle presents in good used condition - with patina from honest use in the bush.
