For sale, on consignment, Holland & Holland's “240 Apex” cased, Mauser ’98, bolt action rifle in very nice aged condition.
The original history was in the case that shows the rifle No. 497 was ordered by Ms. Lees in 1928.
The order sheet shows that the rifle was ordered with a 23” barrel and a beautiful aperture sight that can be retracted to allow the use of the express sights; one standing sight lettered 50 to 200 yards, and a reverse folding spring leaf to 350 yards.
The aperture sight is calibrated with a marked ranges 50 (to) 200 & 350 yards mounted to the rear of the bolt.
The bolt has the traditional turned up bolt handle and the trigger is typical two stage which allows the shooter to feel the trigger before a crisp snap of at 3 ½ lbs.
The stock has nice straight grain through the hand with no cracks and a horn butt plate. The stock has a pull of 14 5/8” to the centre.
The rifle is in the very practical proprietary calibre invented in around 1915 - 40 years before the similar 243 Win. round with similar ballistics.
It is a flat shooting round as the sighting shows 50 yards to 200 yards on one sight. The rifle’s bore has strong rifling and a shiny bore.
The front action ring is stippled in borders and the Knox Form is nicely inscribed, “Hollands 240 APEX Super Express Rifle” followed by the appropriate London Smokeless Proof Marks including “Cordite 34 – 100 Max”, (Bullet Weight).
The barrel is lettered, "Holland & Holland 98 New Bond St. London" and has Holland's hinged for-sight cover.
The original case still has a Holland & Holland Crystal Oil Bottle and the original Holland delivery tag.
