Offered for sale is this original WW1 Short Magazine Lee Enfield No. 1 MkIII made in 1914 as can be seen in the photos which has seen service in both world wars.
At some stage this rifle was refurbished at Lithgow although it does not appear to have undergone a full FTR, despite reference made on the left side of the wrist to work conducted in ’24, ’28 ’34 & ’38 plus on the stock 10/47 is stamped below MA, referencing work done at the Lithgow factory.
The wood work is marked SLAZ 42 & there are MA markings around the rifle to support this so we know it was inspected in 1942 at Lithgow & had the wood replaced with what we think is Queensland maple.
Y9904 is marked on the receiver & stock, whereas the bolt & nose cap have 9904 which we believe is the original serial number.
While it was refurbed at Lithgow it had the magazine cut off removed. The cursive capital R on the barrel knox was placed there while at Lithgow, which was standard practice if an armourer believed there was rust or pitting in the barrel & it needed to be monitored…there is not.
The barrel is shiny & bright with very deep rifling so this would be an accurate rifle to shoot.
Surprisingly, it retains the original brass oil bottle & pull through which is almost always goes missing at some stage, especially after 112 years & 2 world wars!
As can be seen in the photos, this rifle is in excellent overall condition & would make a great option for ANZAC or Service Rifle comps.
WW1 Enfields are always a popular with collectors & are becoming harder to find in this condition so this is would be an excellent addition to your collection or the start on one.
You will know if this is for you so view the photos carefully & make your decision based on what you see as they form the main description & override all written information. For many more photos, visit:
