This old war horse is in magnificent condition for a 110 year old!

Made at Lithgow in 1916, the many markings show it's history which is significant & interesting.

At the conclusion of WW1, this rifle was issued to a CMF Unit in Victoria, as indicated by the CMF 3MD (3rd Military District) stamp & the lined out inventory number on the receiver.

It was returned to Lithgow where the front wood was replaced with Australian Coachwood as indicated by the SLAZ 43 stamps & a brand new HV barrel was fitted in 3/44, as stamped on the barrel & stock. As you'd expect, this barrel in mint condition, so absolutely a shooter.

The rarity of the retained its magazine cut-off through a 1944 rebuild cannot be overstated & makes it incredibly unique. Normally, WW2 armorers removed the cut-offs to bring older rifles up to streamlined Mk.III* standards. This rifle escaped that deletion, preserving its rare early layout alongside its rugged World War II updates while remaining true all Aussie icon.

As can be seen in the photos, the metal work is in excellent condition with no sign of pitting or damage & the wood has done its job in protecting the rifle from bangs & dings, showing a life of service, just not hard service as it is pretty good.

This is an excellent example of an early Lithgow that likely served Australia in two world wars & refurbished back to 1st grade serviceability for war use.

This would make an excellent choice for a service rifle shooter whilst being a highly collectible rifle in its own right with a long & verifiable Aussie military provenance.
