Here we present a most desirable and interesting double barrel, flintlock, presentation pistol from Jean Le Page (1745 – 1834), one of the most significant French gunsmiths of his generation. This master gunsmith’s career covered the periods of King Louis XVI, the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars and the Bourbon Restoration.
This flintlock pistol was presented in 1817 to the British Foreign Secretary, Lord Castlereagh, Robert Stewart (1769 – 1822) by Charles Maurice de Talleyrand (1754 - 1838) the Foreign Minister of France. Both of these gentlemen had interesting careers. Talleyrand, who was once a Catholic priest, was instrumental in the 1799 coup d’etat that lead to Napoleon becoming Emperor of France. He was also made ‘Grande Chamberlain of the Empire’ by Napoleon and then ‘Grand Chamberlain of France’ by King Louis XVIII. Talleyrand was also an acquaintance of the duelists Arron Bar and a friend of Alexander Hamilton.
Lord Castlereagh while the Secretary of War also fought a famous duel in 1809. This was against his political rival the British Foreign Secretary George Canning. After Napoleon’s abdication in 1814 Talleyrand and Castlereagh joined as political allies at the Congress of Vienna. They became key figures in shaping the post Napoleonic European landscape.
This double barrel Le Page flintlock has 8 inch, .50 calibre, smoothbore barrels engraved ‘Le Page A Paris’. The pistol is 14 ½ inches in length.
With the exception of the engraving ‘Le Page / A Paris’ both locks and cocks are devoid of any other embellishments. The actions are in working order.
The carved, full-length, walnut stock with horn fore-end, micro checkering and silver wire embellishments is in very good condition. The horn tipped rammer is original to the pistol.
The silver oval butt cap is engraved ‘IN THE NAME OF GOD / 1817 / TRUTH AND TRUST’. The right side of the grip has large silver letters ‘RS’, for Robert Stewart, with an intertwined silver scroll reading ‘LORD CASTLEREAGH’.
Lastly, there is a large silver plaque along the spine of the grip which reads ‘Presentè à Robert Stewart, Lord Castlereagh / Offert par Charles – Maurice de Talleyrand Pèridord / prince de Bènèvent Foreign Ministre Francais’.
A unique artifact from one the most renowned French gunmakers connecting two of the most influential participants of post Napoleonic Europe.
